April 4: Back in Connecticut for a week’s visit with family, I had a chance to look for the lone Red-headed Woodpecker that has spent the winter in Hokanum River Linear Park in East Hartford, Connecticut. The bird had only a trace of red on the head when it was first discovered, but now has the appearance of a nearly mature adult with its fully bright red head. The numerous dead trees in this park are attractive to woodpeckers, and the fact that the live trees are not yet leafed out makes this bird quite easy to spot. Red-headed Woodpecker is not a commonly seen species in Connecticut.
Just saw a red headed woodpecker in Naugatuck. Saturday June 8 2019
Uncommon, but not rare in Connecticut.
