The Whiskered Tern at Cape May

Whiskered TernSeptember 15:  On 9/12/14 a Whiskered Tern was discovered at Cape May, NJ, just the third documented US record for this old world species, all three at Cape May. The news spread fast and birders from all over headed for Cape May, including me. After early morning tweets that the tern was still present, Nancy and I made the long day trip yesterday from here in Connecticut. It was Sunday, the sky blue, the trafffic happily light through the NYC area, and when we arrived at Cape May Point in the early afternoon the tern was obligingly putting on its intermittent flight show and delighting the many folks who had traveled distances to see it. As of 9/20 the tern was still in the area, being seen in several spots ranging from the beach about half a mile further west, at the end of Coral Ave, to the state beach near the hawk watch, to the bunker pond. It was not reported on 9/21.
