Common Shelduck

ABA NC

(Tadorna tadorna)

Common Shelduck is a Eurasian species, and only accidental to northeastern North America. This striking dabbling duck is slightly larger than a Mallard, and unmistakable with its bright pink bill and mostly white but multicolored body with a green-sheened head. The solitary individual seen here on Hanover Pond in Meriden, CT could possibly be a wild bird, but there is no way to know its provenance with certainty.
