Mexican (Mallard) Duck

ABA NC

(Anas platyrynchos diazi)

Once considered to be separate species, Mexican Duck is currently classified as a subspecies of Mallard, however this remains highly controversial since both Mottled Duck and American Black Duck, both also very closely related to Mallard, are duly classified as separate species.  Mexican Duck has subtle plumage differences and differences in bill color from Mallard, and drakes lack the Mallard’s familiar green head.
