Smew

ABA 3

(Mergellus albellus)

Smew is a small Eurasian diving duck that is only an infrequently seen vagrant in North America. The female is called a “redhead,” not to be confused with the Redhead (Aythya americana) common in North America. The particular Smew individuals pictured here were not in the wild and thereby not counted in the ABA total on this site.
