Thick-billed Vireo at Bill Baggs SP

Thick-billed VireoMarch 6:   After managing to miss the Thick-billed Vireo on two consecutive days last year at Hugh Taylor Birch Park in Fort Lauderdale, I arrived at Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park in Key Biscayne at 8:05 AM today in search of one that has been seen there for the past few days. This is a tropical species, with only a rare occurrence in South Florida.  As it turned out, the bird was in view (although silent) when I got there, and things looked hopeful, but after six observers (including me) had two or three minutes of good but short views of it moving quickly from tree to tree, it receded far back into dense brush and was neither seen nor heard again for the remainder of the morning, disappointing a number of later arrivals including a tour group from Connecticut. I was fortunate to get a couple of halfway decent photos.
