Woodpecker Finch*

ABA

(Camarhynchus pallidus)

The Woodpecker Finch has the distinction of being the only avian species in the world that has developed the amazing ability to use tools to obtain its food.  It grasps tiny twigs, cactus spines, or other similar objects with its beak, and uses them as a lever to pry larvae from under the bark of trees. This special adaptation makes up for the absence of a long tongue that normally characterizes woodpeckers worldwide.Woodpecker Finch
