California Gull is characterized by greenish-gray to yellow legs, both red and black markings on a greenish-yellow to yellow bill, and a red gape. It is the state bird of Utah as a result, so the story goes, of an incident in 1848 when new Utah settlers were confronted by a swarm of crickets that was direly threatening their food supplies when a flock of gulls miraculously intervened and saved the day.
