Northern Harrier is also called “Marsh Hawk,” as it is frequently seen flying very low over open marshland. Note the owl-like face, and the characteristic telltale white rump patch which is easily seen in flight. The eerie gray male, with its signature black wing tips, is reverently known as the “Gray Ghost” for its ability to suddenly appear, seemingly out of nowhere, and be gone just as quickly. Scientific name amended in July, 2017 due to species split.
