A breeder of the far north, the Red-throated is the smallest of the five North-American Loons. In its basic (non-breeding) plumage the bird lacks its namesake red throat, but is readily distinguished from Common Loon, with which it is often seen, by the thinner bill and the red eye appearing silhouetted against the stark white face.
