Black-backed Woodpecker

ABA 2

(Picoides arcticus)

Black-backed Woodpecker is a bird of the north woods.  Like the similar American Three-toed Woodpecker, males have yellow on the head instead of the red found on most other male woodpeckers.  Both species particularly like areas of recent burned-out forest fires, where there are copious charred trees where the birds can find abundant insects.
