Downy Woodpecker


(Picoides pubescens)

The smallest North American woodpecker, Downy Woodpecker is a familiar visitor to backyard feeders, especially suet. It is identical in plumage to Hairy Woodpecker, but distinguished by smaller overall size and noticeably stubbier bill.
