Red-tailed Hawk

ABA 1

(Buteo jamaicensis)

The Red-tailed Hawk is North America’s most widespread buteo, but they can be confusing since they come in a wide variety of plumages and color morphs, and only the adults have the striking namesake red tail. Instead, the more useful identification criteria are the two telltale dark “patagial” marks on the underside of the wing’s leading edge, and the dark “belly band.”
