As of July 7, 2016 Western Scrub-Jay has been split into two species. The more coastal of the two is now called California Scrub-Jay and retains the scientific name (Aphelocoma californica). The interior race, which is paler with less contrast and lacks the pronounced blue breast band, is now called Woodhouse’s Scrub-Jay (Aphelocoma woodhouseii).
