The uncommon Mountain Plover is not a shorebird, but a plain-looking ground bird of the prairie. It is not an easy species to find, but with effort can be seen locally in flatlands from Montana south to New Mexico. In winter it is also seen very locally on open fallow fields in parts of Texas, California, and southern Arizona.
