Eastern Screech-Owl

ABA 1

(Megascops asio - formerly Otus asio)

The nocturnal Eastern Screech-Owl is common throughout the east, but like owls in general is more often heard than seen.  The name is a misnomer as the call is not really a “screech,” at all but actually more of a whinny. The species occurs in gray, brown, and red color morphs. It will readily take up residence in man-made owl boxes.
